"It's my music."
"I own the copyright."

And that's true. The problem isn't whether you own the copyright.

Copyright Is Automatic. Proof Is Not.

Many creators believe that uploading music to streaming platforms or registering with a Performing Rights Organization (PRO) automatically proves their copyright ownership.

Streaming platforms distribute your music. PROs collect royalties. Neither independently certifies that your music existed in a specific form before it was released. That's why distributors, streaming platforms, publishers and other companies sometimes ask creators to provide proof of ownership before approving a release, enabling monetization or resolving a copyright claim.

The Same Song. A Different Outcome.

Nothing about the music changed.

The same recording. The same creator. The same copyright owner.

The only difference was that independently verifiable proof of creation was provided. Once this evidence was submitted, the release was approved and distribution could proceed.
